NEW LYKE WAKE CLUB

WAKES

2008 WAKE

The Summer Wake will see a popular return to the Lords Stone Café, Carlton Bank, on Saturday 10th May 2008, 19.30 for 20.00. A bar is available and camping is available at the Café for those not wishing to travel after the festivities. A splendid buffet meal will be provided and tickets will be £10.00 from Gerry Orchard, General Secretary, New Lyke Wake Club, 4 Cavendish Grove, Hull Road, York, YO10 3ND.

The dress code ( optional – but great fun if people ‘act the part’ ) will be traditional Lyke Wake ‘mourning’, funeral gear, witches robes or similar. A good old Lyke Wake evening of gloom will be a certainty, well perhaps not. People are most welcome to sing on these occasions – so long as a “morbid” time is had by all.

THE ANNUAL WAKE

An Annual Wake is held. Persons attending a Wake are expected to dress with appropriate funereal solemnity. Neckbands, black for Master or Mistress; purple for Doctor are worn. Degrees may be conferred, after inquisition, on candidates who comply with the following: -

Master, or Mistress of Misery. Complete three crossings, one in the reverse direction.

Doctor of Dolefulness. Complete four more crossings. The total seven crossings to include an unsupported crossing and a winter crossing (between 1st December and 29th February). Also to present a Doctoral Thesis on a learned and relevant subject.

Past Master, or Past Mistress. Complete fifteen crossings and perform services to the club recognised as exceptional by the Council.

THE MAY 2007 WAKE

The Summer Wake saw a popular return to the Lords Stone Café, Carlton Bank on Saturday 12th May 2007. A splendid buffet meal was provided.

The dress code of traditional Lyke Wake ‘mourning’, funeral gear, witches robes or similar was observed, to a lesser or greater extent, as the photos below show. The Dirge was most mournfully delivered ably supercharged by the newest Wake attendees who knew the words better than the incumbents and could actually sing – may they all return in 2008. This was followed by the Loyal toast to Edward II and the Lady of the Manor of Goathland followed by another toast to the Memory of the Chief Dirger.
